| I first picked up a record on the air at WPTS (University of Pittsburgh) where I did a bunch of different shows from indie rock to world music before eventually spinning jungle. By 1999, I switched to a more world-educated and moderate tempo-ed base. From there I've dug my heels deeply into broken beat, always with a heavy emphasis on Brazilian music. Just back from 2 months in Brazil, and all I got was this deep, dark, tropical tan, and a stack of records from Sao Paulo, Rio, and Salvador about a half a foot thick. None of it is featured in this mix, cuz like, I just got off the plane, but the mindset was proto-Brazilian as usual. This mix starts with one of Salvador's most respected afoxes/blocos africanos, Ile Aye, and runs through a pinball machine of pieces inspired by electronics, organics and big ideas. Here's wishing you some nice ones as you listen. Back in Philly, I'm playing the Walnut Rooom, 1709 Walnut Street, 2nd floor, on Thursday April 8. |
